Jonas Hiller Returns to Switzerland
Jonas Hiller has wasted no time in planning out his future.
As we first reported last week, the Calgary Flames decided against re-signing goaltender Jonas Hiller to a contract extension. Hiller was going to become a free agent on July 1st, but instead has taken matters into his own hands and will be leaving the NHL.
Rather than wait until July, Hiller announced today that has signed a 3-year contract with EHC Biel of the Swiss A league. His departure from the NHL comes after a miserable season in Calgary where he posted the worst stats of his career.
The move to the Swiss A league is a welcome change for Hiller. He is a local guy who hails from Felben Wellhausen, Switzerland, and he will be able to wind down his playing career in front of fans in his own country. At 34 years old, it’s likely that Hiller has played in his last NHL game.
We wish the best for Hiller, who gave us plenty of highlights throughout his NHL career in Anaheim and Calgary.
