Calgary Flames Looking to Acquire Semyon Varlamov
Rumors circulating today are suggesting that the Calgary Flames, one of the few teams looking for a new starting goaltender, are interested in trading for Semyon Varlamov of the Colorado Avalanche.
The source is Renaud Lavoie, a hockey reporter for TVA Sports. He suggested on Twitter today that the Flames might be looking to deal for Colorado’s starting netminder.
As you know Flames are looking for a goaltender and #avalanche Semyon Varlamov is a goalie they're looking at. 1/2

It’s certainly an odd rumor to pop up, especially considering there has been no word that Varlamov is even available. It’s also a surprise given the other goalies potentially on the market, and the fact that Varlamov’s performance last season was not up to par.
Part of the struggle last season for Varlamov could be associated with his appearances in court. With his domestic violence trial finally in the past, Varlamov could be ready to get back on track next season.
It’s also interesting to note that Semyon Varlamov carries a cap hit of $5.9 million for the next three seasons. He is certainly paid well, but the Flames could arguably pick up a better goaltender in Jimmy Howard for a smaller cap hit at roughly $5.3 million, and potentially have Detroit hang on to some of his salary too.
With the 2016 NHL Entry Draft quickly approaching this weekend, we may know within a few days whether the Varlamov deal will take place.
