USA Win U18 Gold Despite Goalie Blunder

Team USA has won the gold medal at the U18 Ice Hockey World Championships. They won 4-2 in the gold medal game over Team Finland to lift the title. However, the game will also be remembered for a wild own goal scored by the US netminder when they were up 4-1.

With the Finland netminder pulled when the score was 4-1, USA netminder Dylan St. Cyr thought he had a golden opportunity to do what every netminder wants to do and score a goal. Unfortunately for the youngster, this plan backfired on him and he ended up putting the puck into his own net.

St. Cyr tried to fire from long range at the open goal but unfortunately for him, the puck hit his own defenseman before bouncing into his own goal, making the game 4-2. The US team managed to keep the score at that and they walked away with the gold medal, saving St. Cyr from any further embarrassment.

This incident was a small blip in what had been a fantastic tournament for the netminder, so much so that he was named to the tournament’s all-star team shortly after picking up his gold medal. I’m sure this incident will be shown time and time again but in the whole, St. Cyr will be thrilled with his performances at the tournament.

You can view a clip of the incident below. Full game highlights are included, but the St. Cyr mishap starts at 1:44.
